Magento solution specialist

The Magento solution specialist exam

Recently, on 2nd October 2015 our Head of Client Services, Steven, sat the Magento Solution Specialist exam. Below are his thoughts on the exam:

After an extremely busy year here at Space 48, I finally found a window in my calendar and an available seat at the local Prometrics testing centre to get the Solution Specialist exam booked!

The exam was launched in 2014 and is designed to test candidates on their knowledge of the Magento platform and eCommerce in general.

I’ve been using Magento for nearly 5 years now and I’ve worked in eCommerce for over 10 years so I was confident that I had the knowledge to get through the exam. I’ve also been called upon to do Magento admin training for the majority of our projects, that said, I still felt that a good amount of revising time was required to pass the exam.

Unfortunately there are no sample questions available, only the free study guide supplied by Magento,
and as the exam came nearer this did make me feel a little nervous.

There are some good blogs and study guides created by the Magento community, but for me here are the areas that I would recommend investing some time on:

  • Tax Settings
  • PCI Compliance
  • Pricing & Promotions
  • Project Management Techniques
  • SEO Capabilities within Magento

If you have spent a good amount of time within the Magento admin (both Community & Enterprise) and have pushed to understand what Magento can and cannot do, then you should get through this exam. However, if you’re not spending time in and around Magento each day, I would recommend blocking out some time in your calendar to go through each of the sections and to also make sure you understand the Enterprise specific features.

For myself the exam was in-line with my experience gained from using Magento day-in, day out.

I was pleased to achieve the certification of Magento Certified Solution Specialist and I do believe it’s a worthwhile process to go through, both for Account & Project Managers agency side, but also eCommerce Managers client side and others in roles with a similar focus.
